Danshell Learning Disability and Autism Services

Danshell supports and cares for adults living with a learning disability or autism in specialist hospitals and residential services. Our aim is to deliver effective and outcome based services within person centred, professional care environments. We support individuals with a learning disability, who are on the autistic spectrum or have mental or physical ill health. We set high standards for ourselves in the delivery of care, and most importantly, we put service users at the centre of everything we do.

Ralph’s* Story – through the eyes of his Mum

Small new danshell 5 Web Size

Ralph* is afforded all the choices and independence that any young man would have. He goes shopping to choose his own clothes and to the pub for lunch. It was recently arranged for us to join him; we went bowling and enjoyed lunch at a pub. It was a fantastic success; Ralph* was happy to wear the bowling shoes and wait patiently for his turn. It may not sound a lot in the “normal world”, but to us with Ralph* it was incredible. I can’t explain enough how much it means to me to have a relationship like this with my son at last.

We have set Ralph* up with a Skype account and we began skyping regularly each weekend. More recently, Ralph* bought an iPad (with a very strong protective cover!), so that we could video chat more often and so he could swap photos with us at home. This had been fantastic for him; he loves it. He also uses it with “autism friendly” apps which he enjoys.

We are now planning a family break for Ralph*, with his brothers, parents and aunt and uncle, to celebrate his 30th birthday this year. This will be a dream come true for us. Ralph* has been home for Sunday lunch, which he has not done for several years. We are working towards Ralph* eventually having an overnight stay at home, which, again I never thought would happen.
