Joan* came to Oaklands having been on a section 37 for more than twenty years. She had several previous placements breakdown and her ties with her family had become weakened over time. Although Joan* had many skills, she had become very institutionalised and did not believe she had the capability to live more independently.
The support package we provided for Joan* focused on a progressive programme to build her knowledge and confidence. It included money management and budgeting, social skills and self-care. These interventions improved her self-esteem and confidence, which in turn enabled her to move from a hospital to a smaller service. Joan* has now returned to the area where she grew up. She is managing well with minimal staff input and has also began to re-establish the relationships with her family, who live within the area.
