We have made a significant investment in a new specialist service, which will provide extra care and support for adults with learning disabilities and complex needs on Teesside.
Coulby Lodge, based in Hemlington, has now received its registration from the Care Quality Commission and is ready to accept its first service users. The home was opened by Simon Clarke, MP, who was delighted to cut the ribbon as part of the official opening.
Take a look at the video of Simon opening Coulby Lodge and meeting one of the people we support in the North East.
Coulby Lodge is a specialist service and has been equipped and furnished to meet the needs of the people who will be supported there. It consists of two four-bedded bungalows to accommodate up to eight people, and the new service will create about 30 new jobs.
Mel Ramsey, our Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are delighted that Simon was able to join us at the opening of Coulby Lodge.
“Coulby Lodge gives us a fantastic opportunity to bring more specialist support for people with learning disabilities and autism to the Tees Valley, enabling them to remain within the community, perhaps close to family and friends.
“When considering the service we would offer at Coulby Lodge, careful thought was given to establishing what the local authority and health commissioners needed. The message came back loud and clear, ‘local person centred services’, so this is what we are providing and there has been considerable interest already.
“The team at Coulby Lodge will focus on ensuring that the people who use the service are integrated into the local community and wherever possible can access education, employment and meaningful recreational activities to meet their needs.
“Quality of care is at the heart of everything we do and we will carry on listening to all our stakeholders, but importantly, to the people who use our services and their families and ensure they have the support they need to speak up and participate.”
Simon Clarke, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, spoke highly of the new care home: “Coulby Lodge is a terrific service filled with everything you would want to see in a modern care facility and a model for other providers to follow and aspire to.
“It is important to have places like Coulby Lodge so people who are supported there have secure and fulfilling lives, and those who transition from a hospital into the community in Coulby Lodge will find a great home where they can comfortably adapt to the challenges of living more independently outside of a hospital setting.
“It is really impressive to see how everything has come together and this facility is a real asset to the local community.”
