Danshell Chairman In Prestigious Sector Debate
Chairman of the Danshell Group Efi Hershkovitz joined key senior health and social care professionals for a lively and informative debate entitled ‘How to maximise leadership potential in UK health and social care arena’.
The discussion, one of Health Investor UK’s round table events, in conjunction with Compass Executives, was led by the publication’s managing editor Vernon Baxter and focussed on how to identify and develop talented staff and attract the best people into the sector.
Efi Hershkovitz said: “It is very revealing to sit down with my peers across the sector and discuss these issues and to discover that we all face the same challenges.”
Asked during the dialogue if Danshell found it hard to find people with the balance between ambition and drive and the softer skills of empathy and judgement, Mr Hershkovitz said: “Empathy is number one and even for care assistants and nurses, we actually have a scoring mechanism to find the empathy within their applications through psychological profiling.
“I am also involved with every appointment of a manager. For me the home managers are the most important people in the organisation and I tell them in our conferences that their job is much more important than mine.
“If people want to work purely for money they shouldn’t work in the care sector. They need to come for the challenge, they need to come for the empathy and yes, money might come if we can achieve certain things but at Danshell we’ve rigid systems in place and we sometimes lose people that are ‘talents’ because of that.”
Summing up the session Sam Leighton-Smith of Compass Executives said: “The overriding trend from my perspective is that the talent is there but the time to invest in developing it is short.
“There is clearly a gulf between health care and social care in terms of infrastructure and resources to nurture tomorrow’s leaders.”
