Dr Thomas Mlele - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Thomas MleleDr Thomas Mlele graduated as Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1974 at the University Of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; obtained a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) in 1979 in London and gained Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych.) in 1980 in London, UK after training as a Registrar at The Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals. He developed further his interest in Neuropsychiatry and Psychiatry of Intellectual Impairment while training as a Specialist (Senior) Registrar in Bristol Stoke Park, Purdown, Bristol Royal Infirmary and Leigh Court Hospitals from 1981 to 1985.

He was appointed as Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS in Sandwell, West Bromwich in 1985. As Clinical Director, he was part of the team that established comprehensive psychiatric services for people with intellectual disabilities in Sandwell Borough which included a 12-bed Acute Assessment and Treatment Unit; a 15-bed Low Secure Forensic Unit (the Gerry Simon Clinic) and Community Supported Living Units. The community hospital and community living units were commissioned following the closure in 1997 of a large local Hospital, St Margaret’s Hospital in Great Barr Walsall, which served districts of Birmingham, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton Boroughs in the West Midlands.

In 2003 he was appointed as Head of Psychiatry Department at an 88-bed Care Principles Ltd. Medium Secure Unit (Rowan House) in Norwich, Norfolk where he worked till 2007. Dr Mlele later moved to Derby and Nottingham to commission two step-down forensic Learning Disability community treatment units for Ermine Care Ltd and Four Seasons Health Care (Middlestead House in Derby and Sherwood House in Nottingham).

Dr Thomas Mlele has extensive experience in the assessment, treatment, care and management of patients with intellectual impairment with a forensic background  and managing clients with complex health and social needs including epilepsy, autism, ADHD, Schizophrenia, depression; bipolar mood disorders, neurotic illnesses. He has special interest in the management of patients with borderline personality disorders who present with severe complex behaviours.
